The Speed of the Ascendant
When generating a Kundli, many people wonder whether a rough estimate—like 'around 4 PM' or 'early morning'—is sufficient for a meaningful reading.
In Vedic astrology, the Lagna (Ascendant) represents the zodiacal sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. Because Earth completes a full 360-degree rotation every 24 hours, an entire zodiac sign of 30 degrees traverses the horizon roughly every two hours.
If your birth happened near the boundary between two signs (a cusp), an error of even four to five minutes can completely alter your rising sign, shifting the ruler of every single house in your chart.
Divisional Charts Depend on Exact Minutes
While the main Lagna chart (D1) changes signs roughly every two hours, higher divisional charts (Vargas) change much faster.
The Navamsa chart (D9), which provides crucial context for marriage and life direction, changes approximately every 13 to 15 minutes. Advanced divisional charts, such as the Dasamsa (D10 for career) and Shashtiamsa (D60 for fine karmic nuance), change every few minutes.
An inaccurate birth time causes automated software to generate misleading divisional placements, resulting in readings that feel generic or misaligned.
Dasha Timing Sensitivity
The Vimshottari Dasha system relies on the exact mathematical degree and minute of the Moon at birth. Even a slight time difference shifts the Moon's longitude, moving the commencement and transition dates of major Mahadashas and Antardashas by months or years.
When dates for career transitions or relationship shifts are off, it is almost always traceable back to an approximated birth time rather than astrological inconsistency.
What to Do If Your Exact Time Is Uncertain
If your hospital birth certificate or official record notes an approximate time, communicate this transparently to your practitioner before your session.
Experienced Vedic astrologers utilize birth time rectification (Kunda, Tattva, or significant life event verification) to identify the most probable rising degree before delivering detailed guidance.
